Diversity Forum fundraiser supports community in Vellore
In December our college societies came together to celebrate Diversity Day by raising money for educational programme ‘Bloom’ in Vellore, Southern India.
Bloom is one of many projects supported by Life Association who aim to support young people by building schools and children’s homes amongst Dalit communities in India.
The societies sold a variety of sweet and savoury treats and raffle tickets which raised £200. With the money they decided to sponsor a goat and incorporated the college into her name – Elizabeth.
Yvonne Evans, who headed the Diversity Forum at the college, recently took a trip to Vellore to find out more about the Bloom Education Programme and life in Southern India.
On her trip she visited the tuition centre supported by the project and the local villages. She found the community has access to mobile phones and wifi but lacked nutritious foods such as fruit and vegetables due to the cost of the produce in their country.
Inspired by the project the team have returned home with many ideas on how they can support the communities English language development and health. The college will continue to support the educational programme with the money raised.
