Former student lands dream job at Warner Music

Former student Katie Lear has landed her dream job in A&R Co-ordination at Warner Music Group.

Warner Music Group has signed artists such as Ed Sheeran, Madonna and Coldplay.  Katie works alongside the A&R team who sign artists to the label, her role involves booking studio sessions, travel and accommodation for artists, arranging session musicians and organising equipment. She also manages budgets and her team ensure the audio is produced in time to meet the deadline for production.

Katie, now 24 studied at WQE College between 2009 – 2011 taking Geography, Music, English Language and General studies. She then continued her education at Leeds University studying Music.

I chose to study at WQE because I thought it was a great stepping stone for University. I took my GCSEs at Groby Community College which was great, but going to college in the city, and being so close to the University of Leicester campus meant I became much more independent. There was a much wider range of extra-curricular activities such as sports and music ensembles.

In addition to studying Music at A Level she also chose the college orchestra as her enrichment course. Katie’s choice of degree was supported by the music course avaliable at the college.

My ambition was always to study music at University, but I was never completely sure until I took the music course at QE. The lessons and course material were really interesting and my teacher was so amazing and inspiring. We also went on a trip to London which was exciting and the concerts we put on were really great because everyone got really involved

Katie’s choice of degree and her passion for music has enabled her to get work experience in the industry which has ultimately helped land her current job position.

I chose my degree because I am really passionate about music. There are so many different career paths you can take from a degree in music, from performing, working at a record label, organising music events or festivals, and even being a lawyer! My degree taught me a wide range of skills that have helped me in my career working in both International Marketing and A&R Co-ordination at a major record label in London. It enabled me to take part in some really exciting opportunities, including a year in industry, which allowed me to make a great start to my career.

We wish Katie all the best with the future.
