Students gather supplies for local foodbank

Students and staff at WQE gathered long-life foods and household essentials in support of Leicester South Foodbank, part of the Trussell Trust.

The Student Executive set-up donation zones at University Road and Regent Road buildings, to encourage donations of dry, tinned foods and toiletries. In only 5 days, an overwhelming number of items was received, for delivery to the Wigston based branch of the charity.

Leicester South Foodbank provides emergency food and support to local people who are in crisis, through their many hubs around Leicester. With the aim of combating poverty and hunger, the charity also provides emergency food parcels to students at schools, colleges, universities and partners with other charities to supply parcels for families at three Leicestershire hospitals.

Bruce Harrison, Operations Manager at Leicester South Foodbank, said: “The support from the students at WQE was fantastic. We are so grateful that they took this upon themselves to support the community in which they are being educated.”

Walija Fatima, Governor of the Student Executive at WQE, said: “The amount of donations we received for Leicester South Foodbank was amazing. The items will make a big difference to families who have been going through a tough time, so to all those who donated, thank you so much for your generosity.”
