WQE joins other colleges to battle for Varsity title

One of the biggest sporting events in our academic calendar took place last week at the new Leicester Sports Arena. At this year’s Varsity we took a mixed team to participate in multiple sports against other colleges from around Leicester.

Joining teams from Gateway, Leicester and Regent there was some fierce competition. There were a variety of sports available from table tennis, basketball, badminton, indoor cricket and dodgeball.

The event was funded through Leicestershire and Rutland Sport with sessions being ran at all colleges leading up to the event engaging students in the activities. The idea of Varsity is to provide students who aren’t ‘sporty’ or are on a sports team/enrichment to have the chance to experience learning a new sport. The skills they develop from this new challenge are tested when competing in this sport at a big event.

Varsity has had a real shift over the years, with the main focus this year being to provide an opportunity for inactive/semi sporty students to learn a new sport, develop their skills and then get the chance to compete which they wouldn’t get the chance to do on a regular basis. We had a great variety of students that attended, seeing the colleges winning different sports on the day. Unfortunately we couldn’t get the winning title, losing to Gateway however there were lots of smiling faces which made up for the loss!

Although our students fought hard in all the sporting activities ultimately there can only be one winner, Congratulations to Gateway College!
