Wyggeston Boys’ alumni Tim Pigott-Smith to receive OBE
English actor and Wyggeston Boys’ School alumni Timothy Pigott-Smith has been recognised in the New Year’s Honours list and will be awarded an OBE for his services to Drama.
Tim who trained as an actor at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School has starred in films such as Gangs of New York (2002), V for Vendetta (2005) and Quantum of Solace (2008). He is also noted for being an author and stage acting regularly playing Shakespearean and Greek roles.
In an interview with the Daily Mail in 2011 Tim spoke about his time at Wyggeston Boys:
I started acting at ‘Wyggie’ at 11, auditioning for the female lead of Grusha in Brecht’s The Caucasian Chalk Circle but getting cast as the mother-in-law instead; although I was quite tall, my voice hadn’t broken then. In those days, we weren’t allowed to use girls from our ‘sister’ school, so boys had to play all the parts. I always thought that if I blew it as an actor, I could be a journalist like my father.
He is amongst 1197 people to receive New Years Honours.
